As faculty in the field of visual culture, we write today in appalled protest at the recently announced proposal to make eight redundancies of senior renowned colleagues in the world-class department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths College. In a matter of hours, this letter has attracted over 175 distinguished signatories, whose names you should recognize (see below).
To be clear: our belief is that there should be no redundancies in this remarkable department, not that certain people should be retained, only for others to be dismissed. We have worked with staff in the department, attended and participated in conferences at Goldsmiths, and sent our students to work there: we know whereof we speak.
We understand the strictures of financial regimes in higher education and most of us have had to work with restricted budgets. This proposed action makes no sense even considered solely in the budgetary frame: to cut one of your most successful departments, one with low overhead and a high rate of international students, is to cut off your nose to spite your face.
To be clear: our belief is that there should be no redundancies in this remarkable department, not that certain people should be retained, only for others to be dismissed. We have worked with staff in the department, attended and participated in conferences at Goldsmiths, and sent our students to work there: we know whereof we speak.
Visual Culture is a relatively new field of study but one that gains in importance with every passing year as it becomes more apparent how central visual images and visual media are in every aspect of contemporary life. In the establishment of this intellectual project, it can safely be said that there has been no programme so vital and essential as Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths. The work in the department resonates not only with scholars and practitioners in visual culture worldwide but with those in studio art, art history, media studies and film. To merge visual cultures into the Art Department would be to undo decades of work.
To create a vibrant and interconnected department of this kind takes years of dedicated hard work. It can be demolished with a few strokes of a pen. You may feel that the remaining staff will be able to continue. We write to tell you that the international reputation of Goldsmiths College is on the line, with the Research Excellence Framework exercise ahead in 2029, which requires “world class” output. What was thirty years ago a small cog in the machine that is the University of London has achieved international prominence precisely because of initiatives like Visual Cultures. All that is now at stake.
It is not a demonstration of weakness to reverse such proposals, which are currently said to be provisional. It would rather show that management is responsive to the international intellectual community. Please act!
Yours sincerely,
